Self Healing Materials

Definitie

Self-healing materials are innovative substances with the ability to repair damage autonomously, without external intervention, by triggering a chemical or physical response.

Omschrijving

Self-healing materials possess the remarkable capability to detect cracks or damages and initiate a healing process by releasing healing agents that fill or mend the defects. These materials can be categorized into two main types: intrinsic, where the healing agent is uniformly distributed throughout the material, and extrinsic, where capsules of the healing agent are incorporated within the material. Commonly used healing mechanisms include reversible polymerization, capsule-based systems, and vascular networks. These materials have applications in various industries, including construction, aerospace, automotive, and electronics, where they improve durability, reduce maintenance costs, and increase the lifespan of products. However, challenges remain in optimizing healing efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and scalability for widespread use.
